Amber

Amber slipped in through the open door because it smelled of a man. Was this where the prince slept? Had she finally found his rooms?

Padding across the carpet she meowed loudly to see if he would hear her and come running. No answer came and she looked about, listening to hear if there was someone around or not.

Her ears caught the faint sound of water running and aiming for it, she went to investigate. Passing by discarded clothing, her nose confirmed she was in the domicile of a man. Whether it was the right man her olfactory system could not discern, but believing she was finally where she wanted to be, she nudged her way through an almost closed door to find herself in a bathroom.

Steam filled it, the human living here taking a shower. Amber was familiar with the process though she did not approve. Using water to wash, be it warm or otherwise, was just unnatural. One’s own tongue provided all the cleaning power a creature ever needed; not that Buster ever used his for such a mundane and routine purpose.

Oh, no, the slobbering mutt simply drooled onto the floor and would occasionally use his tongue to lick things: human visitors, the floor if something spilled, snails in the garden, Amber if he could get close enough without her noticing.

She shuddered at a hundred memories and told herself to be glad she’d seen the back of him.

“No more idiot bulldog for me,” she chuckled happily.

It was bad enough they existed in the first place; though she conceded it was good to have a lesser life form to look down upon, but why would humans ever want to cohabit with them?

“Hello?” she meowed again. “Is there a dog here?”

No answer came, and semi-satisfied, she crossed the open living space once more, this time heading for the bed. Leaping onto it, she landed amidst a pile of paper and photographs.

Had she been able to read or had the slightest interest in human activities other than those which focused on her and her needs, Amber might have seen the A4 sheet covered in headshots.

The royal family were laid out in neat rows with numbers next to their faces. One was crossed out with bright red pen. It was number forty-six.

The significance would have been lost on Amber even if she had not settled into preening herself in anticipation of the prince returning from the shower. However, the picture of Nugent Chamberlain, eldest son of the Duke of Westborough had particular meaning for the man who slept in the bed on which Amber now washed her face.

The sound of the shower shutting off made Amber stop what she was doing. Turning to face the bathroom door, she batted her eyes and thought about how to present herself: with
