Chapter 3 – Polkadot Calico
A few minutes later, I turned onto the main road and pulled up to the strip mall, I paused in the street and studied the building, again looking for any movement or any signs of people in the immediate area.
All the windows were broken out of the stores in the building, just like the surrounding shops on the street. Bracketed between Grange Hardware and a ceramic shop called Potter's, was Polkadot Calico, Fabric, and Yarn shop.
Tarps had been pulled down in front of the windows on the shops of the strip mall like the previous owners had tried to keep people away or something, like a tarp would work any better than the windows did. At least it would keep the weather out.
I looked around one last time to make sure I was alone, then drove my bike across the parking lot and up onto the walkway, driving right into the fabric store as I held the tarp aside. It was better to keep my motorbike out of sight and give me a quick means of egress if I needed it.
I blinked a couple times as I took the place in. There were hundreds of bolts of fabric in the shop. I chuckled to myself. Of course, there would be. It won't be until people's clothing started wearing out that they would realize what a valuable resource this fabric was. Everything else of value was stripped from the store.
I almost laughed out loud at the smashed tills on the floor. Some idiot stole all the cash, what in the hell would they do with it? It was worthless for anything but starting fires with now.
I sat on my bike a moment and listened carefully. The great thing about having an electric vehicle was that it afforded the luxury of doing just that, listening since the bike was silent. I gave a ten count in the silence and was as satisfied as I could be that I was alone. I still didn't let my guard down, that's how you got yourself killed in this new world of ours.
I dismounted and started going through the bolts of fabric. I couldn't carry much, just what I could strap to the back of the bike and what I could stuff in the saddle bags.
I took two bolts of denim, some thick canvas-like polyester, then went about finding some pretty fabric for my cute obsession back at camp. I had to grin as I remembered her kiss. I absently touched my lips at the memory. I looked around in embarrassment. Melissa would never let me live it down if she saw me getting all mushy like that. I chuckled at myself.
I went through the aisles which hadn't been pushed over by the previous looters, and near the back, I froze when I came to a long table that had all kinds of things stacked up on it. Water bottles, car batteries, bags of what looked like granola.
My eyes went wide, and I grabbed at the machetes on my back in a panic.
