CHAPTER TWELVE

Allison is asleep on her cot when we reach her cell. “Allison,” Mitchell says, and she stirs. She rubs her eyes and stares at us for a moment before getting up from the cot.

“I didn’t kidnap Devon. I wouldn’t do that.”

“Here’s the problem with that. Detective O’Reilly found him in your bedroom closet,” Mitchell says. “How do you explain that?”

“I can’t. I don’t know how he got there. I went out for groceries, and when I came home, that police lady was at my place. She said she needed to talk to me, so I let her into my apartment. I put my groceries in the kitchen and went to get my slippers from my closet. I hate wearing shoes in the house, and I don’t like being barefoot either.”

I get the feeling Allison is the type to overshare.

“So that cop woman was in my living room, and I opened the closet. That’s when I found Devon.”

I turn to Mitchell. “Why didn’t Detective O’Reilly find it odd that Allison went straight to her closet while she was there to witness it?” No one in their right mind would draw attention to where they were holding someone hostage. It makes no sense at all. Even if Detective O’Reilly thinks Allison is crazy—and I wouldn’t argue with her on that point at all—Allison wouldn’t give up Devon’s location that easily.

“That’s what I said,” Allison cries out. “I had no idea he was in there. He wasn’t when I left the apartment. I was so surprised, but at the same time I was happy to see him.”

“He was unconscious,” Mitchell says. “How did you know he was alive when you found him?”

“I bent down and felt the air coming from his nose as he breathed.”

“More like she was trying to suffocate him,” Detective O’Reilly says from behind us. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised she followed Mitchell and me down here.

“I would never hurt Devon. I was only trying to make sure he was alive,” Allison says, grabbing the bars of the cell.

“You seemed to want to hurt him when you thought he’d stood you up at the bar,” I say.

“That was different. I thought he was being a jerk, but when I found out someone kidnapped him, I knew he wasn’t to blame. Devon and I are supposed to be together.”

I wonder how she’d feel to know Devon is aware of the truth behind how they met. That she faked all the accidental run-ins. Man, Detective O’Reilly is right. Given Allison’s past behavior, it’s really easy to make a case against her. But the vision I had at Miller’s was real. She was angry when she thought he’d stood her up. If she’d kidnapped him, she would have already known where he was. But once again, my visions aren’t admissible as evidence. I have to find another way to prove she’s innocent.

“Does anyone else have a key to your apartment?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I have a hidden key, though.
