“What happened?” Teagan says as soon as I pick her up.

“Jackson.” I take a deep breath. “He called me at work. Well, actually some assistant who probably got fired did, but I ended up calling back and it sucked. A lot. The call only happened because ratings for Jackson’s stupid show are down, but then Jackson came on and started doing this ‘Oh, I want to see you’ thing. And when I told him no, he hung up on me.”

“Oh, Hannah, I’m sorry,” Teagan says. “That really sucks, and—wait, how did you call him back? Did you finally get a cell and not tell me?”

“Nope, and this is where things get really craptastic. I had to call from work. Like, from the room where I sit. With Josh and Finn around.”

“Why?”

“What do you mean, why? Finn managed to wash his phone, and Josh’s battery was dead.”

“But what about a pay phone? Or asking Greg?”

“A pay phone? Are you kidding me? We’re lucky we have two vending machines that usually work and a semi-clean bathroom. BurgerTown isn’t big on atmosphere.”

Teagan puts her feet up on the dashboard. “Greg would have let you use his phone.”

“Yeah, maybe, but I didn’t think about that. I thought…when Greg told me about the call, I thought Jackson…I thought maybe something had happened to him. And then, when he actually talked to me, I thought that—I thought he wanted to.” I listen to the crapbucket creak as we turn a corner. “I feel plenty stupid about it now, though.”

“You’re not stupid. He is your…you know. Father.”

“Yeah, but biological only and he didn’t even want to believe that for a while.”

“I really am sorry,” Teagan says again, and taps her feet against the dashboard. “What about Josh? Did anything happen with him?”

I look over at her, grateful, and smile. “Are you trying to change the subject?”

“Obviously,” she says, smiling back. “So…what happened with Josh?”

I shrug.

“Oh, come on! That’s no answer!”

So I tell her about the gift conversation.

“I wouldn’t mind getting a star from a guy,” she says. “I don’t think it’s cheesy.”

“Me either,” I say, thinking of Mom and José. “But hey, he also gave me a hug after I talked to Jackson.”

Teagan’s silent.

“A hug,” I say again. “That’s pretty big, right?”

“Maybe if you sounded like you were happy about it.”

“I am.”

“Wow, monotone enthusiasm. Huge!”

“I am!” I say again. “Is that better? It was just…I’d just talked to Jackson. I wasn’t in the best mood.”

We turn onto her street and Teagan taps her feet against the dashboard again as we stop by her house. “Don’t get mad at me for what I’m going to say, okay?”

“Oh, goody, I can’t wait to hear this.”

“Look, Hannah, you’ve liked Josh for a while now, but you never do anything about it. I mean, you work with him, and he talks to you, but yet you still never—”

“I’m not his type,” I say. “I see the girls he’s with, and they are so not me that it’s—”

“Yeah, but he’s talking to you.
