Chapter 13
Settled in on a bench out at the beach, Felix and I bookended Jake between us. I took my first luscious bite of chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a homemade waffle cone. Iâd asked for sprinkles too, and Garry Templeton, owner of the Daily Scoop, was extremely generous with the shaker.
I let us all sit for just a few moments and enjoy the soft breeze as night settled over the island and the streetlights came on. The moon reflected in all her glory over the ocean and the wavelets at the shore kept up a rhythm that would have normally put me to sleep.
I leaned my head back for just a second, then took another bite of my creamy snack.
Then it was time to get some answers.
âAll right, the little interlude is done. Weâve got ice cream, Iâm feeling as mellow and open as I possibly can be, so talk, Jake. Whatâs going on and what do you have to get off your chest?â
âTo the point.â He used a napkin to wipe the side of his mouth.
Felix used another napkin to get the corner of his own mouth then reached past Jake to hand me another once since Iâd forgotten mine. âTo be fair, she gave you at least a few minutes without breaking into the questions.â
âThat is true.â Jake took another bit of his ice cream and I waited, quite patiently I might add, for him to start with the words. âGive me a second.â
He took another bite of ice cream out of his bowl and stared out over the ocean. The sparkle of the stars in the sky and the puffy clouds scudding through the dark made for a beautiful picture, but I could be enjoying this from my deck instead of down here waiting for the guy whoâd sought me out to start with the talking.
âThe family wanted to be called in, yes, but Iâm not the one who actually did it. I just want to start there. I had my cell out to call the sheriffâs office when my cousin showed up and took it from me. Heâs the one who sent out a group text to get everyone to the crime scene before the police were called.â
He kept his eyes forward and his hands in his lap. Without eye contact I couldnât tell if he was trying to pull one over on me, but that could wait until he had the whole story out.
âSo you admit it was a crime scene.â I pounced on that one like it was the last peanut butter egg at Easter and the supply boat wasnât coming back for another two days.
âYes, I do, even if the others donât want it to be. Currently, theyâre doing everything in their power to keep it ruled as nothing more than a suicide. But I guarantee you Iâm not alone, and I can tell you that outside the rift with the Franklins, weâre starting to have our own infighting over who did this and how it should be handled.
