Chapter 11

CHARMING

After leaving the restaurant, Charming etherhopped Oberon and Squeak back to his apartment. Squeak was getting rather anxious about visiting her nest.

Leaving his chicken to lay her egg in her preferred spot in a drawer in his bedroom, Charming went to join Oberon in the lounge.

Oberon was pacing by the window.

He turned when Charming came in. “Do you think it’s good for Sigourney to get so wrapped up in this case? What if Gaia isn’t alive? What if this all ends horribly for her?”

“I know,” said Charming with a sigh. “But she’s asked for our help. I never thought I’d see the day. And she’s going to do this with or without us, so…”

His voice trailed off.

Oberon nodded. “You’re right. I suppose we have to see this through.”

He didn’t look any less worried.

Charming wasn’t sure how to get hold of Den or Andrew. A call to Engoria didn’t yield a number or address for either vampire, so Charming had to resort to calling Bordey.

“We’ve already questioned them,” she said on the phone, sounding busy and slightly irritable. “And I can’t have you upsetting them again. The bosses here want them left alone.”

“Seriously?” he said. “Vampires?”

She sighed. “That’s what I said. Though, I never actually said it out loud.”

“I already met them at Engoria’s dinner party, remember?” he said. “As far as they are concerned, I am just curious about what happened afterwards. I’ll say Engoria sent me. I won’t mention that I got their numbers from you.”

“You didn’t tell me that Her Grace Sigourney Maltei was also at the dinner party,” she accused. “I overheard Polliver mention it to a chief. He seems to think she might have something to do with Katie’s death.”

Charming grimaced. He had hoped this would not happen.

“Really?” he said. “Do you think she has anything to do with it?”

Bordey sighed. “I don’t know. Polliver has a bee in his bonnet about her, I suppose.”

“Listen, please can you give me the vampires’ phone numbers,” said Charming. “I really would like to talk to them.”

She agreed slightly reluctantly, but only if he would share anything that he learned with her.

Charming called Den first. It was daytime, so he was surprised that the vampire answered the call. Den agreed that Charming could come and visit him at his nest. He sounded rather hyper, frustrated at being trapped in his nest by the daylight, and annoyed that Katie and Matilda had gone missing and that he had been treated as a possible suspect. He seemed overly eager to learn all that Charming knew.

“Come in half an hour,” he said, and hung up the phone.

In the meantime, Charming phoned Andrew, whose paramour answered, purring, “Andrew Ansel’s phone. Can I take a message?”

She was most reluctant to wake up Andrew from his rest, but eventually agreed to do so.

It was no wonder that she had been nervous. Andrew was irritable when she handed the phone over to him.

“What is it?” he demanded. “My day’s rest has been disturbed enough already by the Sentinel Alliance.
