16th Day of Leaf Drop, Evening of the Western Fireball, Year 1441

Bortand - 3 Months Later

Tarynn woke to the usual sounds of her parents getting dressed and making a hurried, cold breakfast, as the yard animals squawked for their seed. She stretched and yawned, not wanting to leave her warm trundle near the fireplace. She looked at her left arm, using her right hand to trace the dots there, hovering longer over the blue mark.

Good morning, River.

While the stone hadn’t spoken since the day Tarynn found it, she felt its greeting in her bones. She pulled the loose brick out of the side of the hearth and reached into the small gap behind it to pull out the pouch containing the gemstone.

Her father had made her the small bag out of a scrap of leather. She ran her fingers over her initials burned into one side.

Opening the simple tog, she tipped the stone into her palm. As always, whenever she touched the blue gem, the mark on her arm burned just a bit brighter and she felt a pull that she didn’t understand. She had tried asking the stone for answers, but it had been mysteriously silent since telling Tarynn its name.

A strangled cough brought Tarynn’s attention back to the present and she saw her mother staring at her with a deep frown. Hurriedly putting River back into her pouch and back into the cubby, Tarynn replaced the brick and rose, carefully straightening and tucking the blankets and pillows on her trundle bed. Once everything was properly placed, she moved to help with the morning chores.

Both of her parents went about their days with faces drawn by fear. She had heard Mama speaking to Pa a few weeks ago, when Miller Liam had returned from the village. He had no new answers for them, but recommended that they keep Tarynn separated from the stone as much as possible.

Pa had reluctantly agreed, telling Tarynn she could keep the stone in a safe place, but that she wasn’t allowed to carry it or hold it for any length of time.

Tarynn kept to the rule as much as possible, however, the need to check on the stone each morning and each evening could not be denied.

As she helped her father bring in the horses currently on their barefoot month, Tarynn noticed a man limping towards them. “Papa.” She lifted her hand and pointed.

Her father turned in the direction she indicated. “Stay here.” He strode off, meeting the man some distance away. The visitor flashed a silver emblem from the inside of his cloak, far too quickly for Tarynn to make out its shape.

Pa clasped the man’s forearm and then threw his arm about the man’s waist to help him walk. “Tarynn, run to the cottage and tell your mother we have a visitor. He needs food and a place to rest.”

She hesitated for a moment. The stranger’s gaze on her felt heavy and foreboding. She made her way to the house, relaying her father’s instructions.
