The latter phrase preserves an authentic Rimbalderie: the craggy surroundings of Harar as his ‘garden’.

The enthusiasm soon waned: fiercely brief as always. In Aden, in early 1885, perhaps in response to a request from his family, he writes: ‘I’m not sending you my photograph. I am careful to avoid all unnecessary expenses, and anyway I’m much too badly dressed.’ And then, a couple of months later, comes the curt announcement: ‘I’ve sold the camera, to my great regret, but not at a loss’ (14 April 1885).
