"So this is your home."

He set the noisy brake and peered out the front of the windshield as if taking in a foreign and exotic, but probably dangerous, land.

"That's right. Want to crash on the couch tonight?" I tried to sound casual, like a buddy, not somebody propositioning him.

He looked at me, then the house. Climbing out of the Jeep, he stretched his arms and neck, clearly trying to work out some kinks. Grunted a little, too. I looked away so I wouldn't be watching, biting my lip, ashamed that he had to think about it.

"Sure, if you don't mind me being in wolf form. I need a break."

"Oh. Okay." I was startled by his quiet words, and no longer so hurt.

He walked around to help me out of the Jeep before I could clamber out on my own. He took the crutches first, from my fumbling hands. Then he reached for me.

My face felt hot with embarrassment, and I wished he wasn't going to do it. But yep, he reached for my waist, lifted me down as gently as if I were a little lamb.

It wasn't good for the ego, but it made me feel warm inside in other ways — cared for and protected, precious and special. I tried not to smile, squirm, or let on I liked it. I felt like I was probably going to giggle inappropriately at any moment if he left his hands there any longer.

Fortunately for me, he didn't. He just gave me the crutches and moved back, as if I hadn't been awkward at all and he didn't mind the close proximity. He seemed pretty mellow, actually, now that he wasn't driving.

I wondered if I would ever understand him — what pissed him off and what he didn't mind. I had a feeling I might not always like knowing.

But still, the man fascinated me, and I couldn't help being warily curious about him, every facet and bulge. Like I said: dangerous.

"It's a nice yard. Is there anywhere safe to run around here, as a wolf?"

My neighbor Marla Smith stood on her front porch, flapping a rug for longer than she needed to. Now she spoke up, calling to me, "Is this your new boyfriend?"

She seemed equal parts scandalized and fascinated by my love life, such as it was. I'm sure she imagined I had orgies all the time, and loved imagining them, either in excitement or to be incensed.

Either way, fun times for her. I hated to disappoint her, but she'd probably be seeing Kendel a lot. He'd get pissed off if she continually mistook him for a boyfriend and made comments along that line.

"This is my new work partner, Mrs. Smith," I called. "This is Kendel."

"Kendel, isn't that a girl's name?" She was looking him up and down, gaze lavishing attention on his muscular build, not missing an inch. She adjusted her glasses slightly for a better look. She gave a low whistle. "He's dishier than that other man you bring home.
