Chapter Eleven

“Chloe, are you listening to me? Chloe?”

Chloe snapped out of her reverie and tilted her head toward Jenna. Okay, not really a reverie, but rather a recollection of last night. Griffin had come home from his road trip and unexpectedly dropped by. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get him out of her mind. She couldn’t seem to stop feeling Griffin’s lips as he explored every inch of her body. She couldn’t stop feeling the heat radiating from his skin as their bodies snaked together. She couldn’t stop feeling the tender kiss he’d laid upon her forehead when he’d left this morning, while thinking she was still asleep.

She couldn’t stop feeling. Period.

He seemed different this time. Different from the man who had left Chicago two weeks earlier. It almost seemed like…like he’d missed her.

So many times in the past few months he’d inadvertently reminded her why she could never trust a man like him. But other times, like last night, she couldn’t imagine living without him.

“Chloe!” Jenna stomped her designer-clad foot against the tiled floor. “Where are you today?”

“Sorry.” She shifted on her stool to face Jenna. Her friend had stopped by during Chloe’s mid-morning lull to talk about something very important. Her wedding. “Tell me again?”

“I made an appointment for you, Ashton, and me to pick out bridesmaids dresses,” Jenna said.

“You mean you’ll pick out the dresses, and I’ll just be there to make sure I can pull off a strapless.”

“Exactly,” Jenna said brightly. When Chloe snorted, Jenna added, “You know I’m kidding, right? You absolutely have a say in the dress.”

Chloe lifted an eyebrow. “As long as it’s your choice of color, style, and length?”

One corner of Jenna’s mouth curled. “Well, it is my wedding.”

Chloe took her friend’s hand and squeezed. “And I will wear whatever dress you’d like.”

“Thanks.”

Chloe expected Jenna to rush off to the restaurant, but she stayed seated. “Is everything okay, Jen? You’re not having second thoughts about Hal?”

“What? No.” Jenna’s eyes flashed with anger. “Hal and I are fine. We’re great, in fact. You’re the one I’m worried about. And so is Ashton, by the way.”

She shouldn’t have been surprised that Jenna and Ashton had discussed her; after all, they were at the restaurant all afternoon and evening together. Still, it stung.

“There’s nothing to be worried about. The Brawlers are on a winning streak and the bakery is doing well. What’s there to complain about?”

“Oh, how about that you’re falling for him and he’s going to break your heart?”

Chloe snorted. “I’m not in love with him. I’m just sleeping with him.”

“Please. You don’t know how to sleep with a guy without having all sorts of happily-ever-after fantasies about him. Believe me, I’ve tried to teach you.”

Chloe stood and faced her. “Is that how your relationship with Hal works?”

She’d hit her mark. She could see it in Jenna’s frozen face.

“We’re not talking about me. Tell me the truth. Can you see a future with Griffin? Because if you can, I’ll be thrilled for you.
