Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) are old-fashioned biennials that will often bloom the first year if seed is started in late winter or very early spring. As members of the pink family, they are pleasantly fragrant and great as cut flowers. There are many cultivars available and plants do well started from seed.

Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) are famous biennials that bloom on three-foot-tall stems, crowded with dozens of white, pink, or cerise pouch-like flowers of great beauty. Once in your garden they reseed with ease. These plants are the source of the heart stimulant digitalis and apparently, the drug is just as dangerous for deer as it is for humans, so they give this plant a wide berth.
