Twenty Six

There were no further attacks during the night.

I woke up feeling grumpy, but well rested. My body wanted to run, but I needed a bathroom first. There wasn’t one. So I made my way to the breastwork, and now found a door sized hole in it. I continued out, and looked around for a suitable place where squatting down wouldn’t be very visible. Shitting while fully clothed is definitely a strange feeling, but the suit copes with it the same as it does for peeing. Nothing for anyone to see, and no mess on the skin after.

The workings of it were a mystery to me though, even after all this time wearing it. Where did all the water, blood, and slime go when the suit shifted? And presumably flaking skin and sweat as well. All a mystery, but one no-one seemed interested in finding out about it. I wasn’t even sure who to ask. Or sure I wanted an answer.

The entire area was burnt out extensively, but the mound I’d hidden behind was so old, that there wasn’t really anything left there to burn now. Other areas though had burned flat. I tried turning my smell back on, and immediately turned it off again. The area might be almost cold now, but it still smelled of burnt dog, which was almost identical to burnt human as far as my nose could tell.

I went back inside, where no-one was game to even say good morning, and fished food and water out of my pack, eating it sitting on the side of my bed. The others woke one by one, and went outside as well. So I was finished with breakfast and contemplating what to do next, by the time Snark returned and started eating a particularly revolting looking rodent snack. Zee shuddered, but Patters laughed at her.

John turned up while I was sitting there still.

“If no-one minds, we’ve gone back to our Supernatural bodies. So keep calling me John.”

“Whatever,” I said, somewhat callously.

“What’s the plan for today?”

Snark stopped eating, and they all looked at me.

“We need to find a lake.”

Zee looked shocked, with Patters and Dodgers looking surprised. Snark started chewing again.

“Why a lake?” asked Bill, John, shit this was too hard to keep straight. John.

“Did you dream you were riding a pegasus to a lake where a whale was laughing at you?” asked Zee.

“Unicorn and dolphin.”

“Pegasus and dolphin,” said Patters.

“Unicorn and whale,” said Dodgers.

We all looked at Snark.

“What?”

“What did you dream?” asked Patters.

“I had a wonderful dream of a ten course banquet, each course with a different rodent delicacy. What?”

Patters had face palmed. I didn’t blame her.

“Why is that important?” asked John.

“I’ve no idea,” I responded. “But the fact four of us all dreamed practically the same thing would seem to be a pointed hint of where we go next.”

“Is that some sort of human intuition thing?”

“No. More likely a higher being influencing our dreams thing. If you don’t sleep, you don’t get it.”

“How does that explain Snark?”

“No-one can explain Snark,” said Dodgers, and Patters fell off her bed laughing.
