When Lindsay hadn’t surfaced after three hours, Rae did some work of her own, as she hadn’t got all that much done the last few days.

Lunchtime passed, so Rae took in a tuna sandwich and left it beside Lindsay. Rae noticed several video feeds on screen, and Lindsay was listening as two of the men talked. Rae tried not to step into the camera’s view, but she lingered for a moment by the doorway.

“Thank you,” Lindsay whispered.

Rae returned to the living room just as the phone rang. She answered it on the first ring.

“Hi Rae? It’s Dawn.”

“Dawn, how’s it going?” she asked, as she sat down comfortably on the sofa and put her feet up.

“I was going to ask you the same question. Saskia and I are fine; we dodged the rain and went to the movies. We’re planning to be out your way this weekend and wondered if we could meet up for a coffee or something?”

“Well, Lindsay’s over—”

“Oh, so she’s arrived?” Dawn asked. “Come on, then, what’s it like seeing her again?”

“It’s interesting,” Rae said, and caught the smile in her own voice. “She’s changed and yet she’s so much the same. I always liked her, but I think I like this Lindsay better. She’s more mature, you know?”

“I know what you mean,” Dawn replied.

“We don’t have plans to be anywhere else this weekend. I’d say it’s fine, but I’ll run it by Lindsay later. Her work rang, and she’s been on video chat to them for most of the day.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I guess it’s the way of it sometimes,” Dawn replied.

“Yeah it is. I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know what’s happening,” Rae said.

She didn’t like leaving Dawn waiting, but she was certain the woman would understand.

“Saskia’s heard some wonderful news. It’s a girl,” Dawn exclaimed, speaking of her partner’s pregnancy.

“Aw that’s amazing,” Rae replied. “Tell her I’m so happy for her.”

“You can tell her yourself when you hopefully see her at the weekend,” Dawn replied. “I’ve got to go, she’s heading out to the car. We’re doing some maternity clothes shopping today.”

“Okay, you have fun and tell Saskia the same,” Rae replied.

When Dawn hung up, Rae did the same thing and smiled. Dawn and Saskia were another lesbian couple she knew, only they lived out in Wicklow on the east coast. She wasn’t sure why they’d chosen to visit her neck of the woods, unless it was mainly for a catch-up and some sightseeing. There were some great beaches and pristine natural areas to the south; though the Wicklow Mountains were lovely too.

Dawn and Saskia had bought a house there because the prices were lower than Dublin and you could get more for your money that way. It meant further to drive to work, but she’d never seen either of her friends question their decision. They seemed to like it where they were. If only they weren’t so far away, she’d have caught up with them more often. At least she had Lindsay close-by, work or not.
