Chapter Sixteen
I really wanted to glare at Noah, cooking in the Florida heat, as he checked his list and the corresponding box in the back of the Roman Media van, confirming I had, in fact returned his precious camera to Andre shortly after discovering the dead body of his boss at the foot of the stairs. It wasnât like I could forget such an action. The entirety of the previous hours since falling on top of the lifeless form of the host of Spirit Heroes would remain with me the rest of my life, I was positive. Not something one was likely to forget quickly, despite my wishes to the contrary. Iâd been self-possessed enough to accomplish that much, proud of my thoughtful course of action, though apparently, Noah wasnât quite so in control of his mental state as I had been.
âShe told you already,â Denver said, his voice low and angry, glancing at me before backing off. Sweet of him to speak up, it was always nice to know he had my best interest at heart, but antagonizing Noah wasnât helping.
âFine,â the young crewman grumbled, not meeting my eyes or Denverâs for that matter, while Naomi swiveled on her chair away from the footage she was attending to inside the van proper, a frown creasing her beautiful face. âWhatever.â
Since the argument about the so-called missing equipment hadnât ended until just that moment, Noah refusing to let go of the incident and vocally declaring only a moment ago if Iâd lost his prized possession Iâd be paying to replace it, both Naomi and Andre, Denver hovering behind me with an unhappy expression that told me he wasnât going to keep his mouth shut much longer, were witness to the rather nasty attitude Noah had been sporting.
âBro,â Naomi said, prodding him with one finger. Her dark eyes met mine, not nearly as antagonistic as Iâd been expecting considering her twinâs attitude. âWhat the actual? Donât be a jerk.â She prodded him with one foot. âApologize to Alice. Now.â
While Noahâs confrontational nastiness wasnât really a surprise, his normally on-side sisterâs reaction was. This was a new side to her Iâd never seen before, a caring and empathetic Naomi who was putting someone elseâs comfort ahead of that of her typical reaction to anyone not agreeing with her brother, whether he was right or wrong. Mind you, if Iâd had a twinâor a sibling, as far as that wentâI, too, might have been protective of that beloved personâs safety and security. I certainly felt that way about Denver. This was instead a clear deviation from Naomiâs historical interactions with me. Like Iâd mentioned, it wasnât exactly that she was my enemy, but sheâd also refrained from any sort of kindness, not to mention respectful attention, prior to my witnessing her fight with Emma. Naomi might have been nurturing good feelings to keep me from revealing what Iâd learned, a possibility. It was, however, a tactic that failed because the sheriff now knew everything I knew.
