If … Your class seems to be highly stressed,

Then … Add more predictability in the form of procedures and rituals, and go over the 90-second rule with them.

If … You are dealing with many stressed and traumatized students,

Then … Practice mindfulness, provide stress balls, and teach breathing exercises.

If … Students are not turning in work on time,

Then … Discuss what is preventing them from doing the work and provide help with the content, if needed; talk about time management, if necessary; or provide extra time in a calm spot, if possible.

If … A student is not listening,

Then … Review good listening practices and offer time or space to refocus.

If … A student is not staying focused,

Then … Be sure you are providing brain breaks to give time to refocus.

If … Individual students look stressed and have trouble functioning or participating,

Then … Have them try the CBS (count, breathe, squeeze) strategy, or consider letting them go to a calming area in your classroom or building. We can't expect students to focus if they are fighting "bears" somewhere in their lives.

If … Students have done poorly on an exam or a project,

Then … Remember that stress levels are up under these circumstances—there's more cortisol in their bodies and brains. It can take 24 hours for students to return to a state of homeostasis, or balance. Let them relax, talk to someone, or try breathing exercises. Remind them about the importance of a growth mindset (see Chapter 3).
