Establishing work standards

As your business grows and you find yourself unable to personally handle or even supervise all the tasks directly, it becomes critical that you establish work standards. Such standards give your supervisors a level of productivity that they need to achieve. Additionally, you can implement incentive programs for increased productivity but only if you have a base standard from which to start.

Standards are actually quite easy to establish if you keep good records. First, let’s look at the task of sticking cuttings. Begin by delving into your records for the past year to create a chart that starts with a monthly breakdown of how many cuttings were stuck and how many hours were spent on the job. For each month, divide the number of labor hours spent by the number of cuttings stuck. This figure represents the time per cutting stuck. Multiply this number by your actual cost of labor (known as your burden rate) to get the cost per stuck cutting. Finally, divide this number by the success rate to give you your net cost per cutting. This calculation can be summarized as follows:
