Chapter 21
On the Run
The second hand of my watch staggered back and forth, back and forth, stuck in time; and in the air and in my heart I could hear it: the tick without a tock.
It had to be Julian. It could only be him, annoyed that I hadnât answered my phone. I picked it up and dialled his number, about to tell him ⦠I donât know, really ⦠but there was no dial tone.
Marbles rolled his eyes and made a sound which bore an uncanny resemblance to, âDuh.â
He was probably right to be sarcastic. I mean, why would my phone still work? How could anything work, when time was standing still?
âYou can move about, though,â I noted, looking with interest at my cat. âYou can move through stopped time, just like I can.â
He wasnât interested in my realisation. He was far too busy launching himself onto the windowsill, so I rushed over there and looked down onto the back alley. The Wayfarer outside was completely still, motionless, just like everything else.
And in that eerie silence, I heard the sound of a key in a door. I dashed out into the main living area and looked out the window which gave me a view of the front of the building.
There was a man outside, in a black puffy jacket with a grey hoodie underneath. He was at the door of Blyâs Haberdashery, pushing it open.
As my heart skipped beats, my chest grew tight. It couldnât be Julian. Julian was taller, and anyway, this man had Joleneâs stolen key. Whoever he was, he was the one who had been here while I was away. He had killed Paula, injured Rick and Dillis, and made sure I could never feel safe in my home again.
My eyes strayed to the bed, once more wishing that I could hide under there. Or, if I really had magic like Julian was so sure I did, I could make myself invisible so that the guy in the hoodie couldnât find me.
But those werenât viable options right now, and neither was launching myself out my bedroom window, in the hope that I could jump across the gap and land on the staircase. Seeing as I still hadnât learned parkour, it was far more likely that I would plummet to the ground. So I did the only thing I could do: I scooped Marbles into my arms, dashed out to the buildingâs hallway, and legged it through the door to the outside stairs. And then I kept on moving, running down those steps faster than Iâd ever run before.
