The goats and cows stumbled along, the goats busy chomping on the leaves Iâd stuffed into their nose bags, paying no attention to their surroundings. Both Essie and I had tried calling Teesy a few times since we set out for her house, but she still wasnât picking up. I really hoped everything was okay.
âSo,â said Essie. âSeb stayed at Pendulay again last night. He seemed a little off, though. Do you have any idea what could be wrong with him?â
âMe?â I concentrated on the animals, afraid to meet her eyes. âHow would I know? I guess he was still upset about Vince.â
In a while, when Iâd dealt with the goats and the wedding breakfast and the many other things, I would take a moment to think about what happened last night, and what it meant, if anything. Right before I went to sleep, it had all seemed so simple, but now ⦠now, I just didnât know.
She shrugged. âYeah, maybe. I guess it took a lot of self-control for him not to hit Vince back.â
I hadnât thought of that, but she was right. Seb was a physically strong guy, but heâd stayed so calm last night instead of retaliating.
âBut ⦠look, Bell, did anything happen because of that potion you took?â she went on. âSeb explained what happened, he said it just made you relaxed and sleepy, but ⦠I dunno. I feel like he was leaving something out.â
âNo,â I said, possibly too quickly. âNothing. Nothing at all. He noticed almost as soon as he found me that I wasnât myself, and he marched me straight to Lauren to find out why.â
âMm hm.â She sounded unconvinced. âWell, can I ask you something?â
âSure.â My voice came out a little strained, as I was running at the time, trying to catch Merry whoâd strayed off the path. As I finally got hold of her and turned her in the right direction, I said, âYou know you can ask me anything.â Inwardly, I prayed that she was finished with questions about last night.
âIf ⦠well, if you could change things, would you? I know weâve chatted about this before, but Iâm being serious right now. If you could do what I do, go back in time, and make it so that certain things never happened and Vince wasnât kidnapped, would you do it?â
I looked curiously at my sister. âWhy are you asking me something you already know the answer to? Iâve told you before â of course I would, if there were no consequences. But there would be, wouldnât there? So the question is pretty pointless.â
âWell, itâs justââ She broke off, her face turning deathly pale. With her hand over her mouth, she said, âUm, Bell ⦠I think Iâve just bumped into a body.â
I walked over to her, my legs feeling weak as I saw him. Essie had stepped back, and she looked like she might vomit. I felt a little nauseous myself. There he was, in the middle of the
