Chapter 7

Drew

Lacey and I had a serious talk after we left Sophia’s. She likes Sophia and wants me to be happy, but she’s afraid that we’re jumping into a relationship too fast. Of course, I snapped at her—she’s been all for us getting together from the beginning, even if it was only five days ago. But we’re adults, not teenagers.

It does feel much longer than five days though. Lacey pointed out the timing of our relationship and the pressure of business, but if it weren’t for Sophia, I wouldn’t have come up with the snowflake and sapphire idea. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be this happy right now.

So why do I feel so unsettled? I understand what Lacey’s saying, and deep down inside, I guess I’m wondering if it’s too fast too. But what about love at first sight?

It’s almost seven. Sophia texted me this morning that she’d stop by after closing. Today was busier than most, and I haven’t had much time to sit down. This has been the most profitable year since we opened five years ago. I never imagined we’d be as successful as we’ve become. I have to thank Christian for that with his business and marketing experience.

I walk through the store to ensure every jewelry cabinet and case is locked up the way it should be. The glass cases and mirrors have been cleaned properly for the next day. I turn off some of the lights.

There’s a knock on the entrance door. My heart slams in my chest. Not because I’m startled but because I know it’s her. I turn around and she waves at me through the window. My tight muscles relax just from her beaming smile. I unlock the door quickly.

I reach out my hand to her. “Ms. Krose. Please come in, out of the cold.”

“Good evening, Mr. Devlin. Thank you for agreeing to see me after working hours.” She’s willing to play this little game. “I can only imagine how busy you must be.”

I lock the door behind her and latch the keyring to a beltloop on my jeans. “We try to accommodate our favorite customers.”

I place my hand at the small of her back. “My office is this way. Follow me.”

Once we’re in and I close the door, I cage her against it before she can speak.

“Must you look so beautiful, Ms. Krose, every time I see you?” So much for taking it slow.

She traces her finger along my jaw. “Mr. Devlin, you know I aim to please.”

“May I kiss you?” I brush my knuckles against her soft cheeks. “Or is that being too forward with a customer?”

“Hmm, only if I get a discount on the sapphire necklace I tried on the other day.”

“It’s yours if you let me kiss your precious lips as long as I wish.” I devour her mouth, and she gives back as much as I take.

She nips my lower lip playfully. “You’ll never get rid of me if you kiss me like that all the time.
