Chapter 16

Pete’s early flight meant that he needed an afternoon nap. I was in our office going through email when Emma Lamb called. “Hi, Jamie. Anything new on your end?”

“Not yet. Did you attend Clarke’s autopsy?”

“Yes. There was nothing significant on the exam except for the gunshot wounds. Two of them went right through his heart and aorta, so death would have been nearly instantaneous.”

“Did they get slugs?”

“Yes. They were .40s. We’re waiting for ballistics.”

“You mentioned trace evidence the other day. Did they find any?”

“Several fibers that look like carpet from a car. If they can narrow down the make and model, that might help. Although the killer may have been driving a rental, too, so it might not help that much.”

“Have they found Clarke’s rental?”

“Not yet. It wasn’t returned to the airport. I’m thinking the killer may have used Clarke’s rental to move the body.”

“Did they find records of anyone who flew from LA to El Paso, rented a car, and returned it the next day?”

“No. The FBI is checking passenger manifests now, making a list of people with fast turnaround times over that weekend.”

“Maybe the killer drove to New Mexico. It’s twelve-and-a-half hours to Alamogordo from here.”

Emma sounded unhappy at that thought. “If so, he’ll be much harder to find.”

“When will you get Clarke’s phone records?”

“Next week, supposedly. We’ll see. Oh, and his memorial service is going to be on Monday at the Riviera Country Club at two in the afternoon. Are you still interested in going?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll pick you up in front of your house at 1:45.”

“Okay. Thanks, Emma.”

“You bet.”

We said goodbye and I hung up, thinking. A motivated and well-caffeinated murderer could make it to New Mexico, kill and dispose of Gordon Clarke, and be back in LA in under thirty hours.

If he was a cop and wasn’t scheduled to work, no one would know or care that he wasn’t around for the weekend.
