SNOWED IN

Lorenzo

We got to my building and I carried her to the elevators and up to the penthouse. She was still shaking in my arms and moving in and out of consciousness. When I got there Samuel was already waiting for us. I placed her down on the guest bed and went back down to the car to retrieve our bags.

When I came back up, I could hear the wind blowing hard. The blizzard was settling in which meant that I was going to be stuck with Amber for the next few hours at the very least.

I placed the bags on the couch and walked over to the kitchen. I watched as the storm raged outside, happy to be in the comfort of my sky palace. That was what my brother called my home. The penthouse walls were mostly glass. I had a great view of Seattle from up here. It was the major selling point for me when I made the purchase. A mix of marble tiling and solid hardwood made up the flooring. Designer finishes and pops of white and deep brown splashed the surfaces helping my vision of a modern bachelor pad come to life. The open floor plan featured oversized pieces of furniture creating a space that was sophisticated yet comfortable. It was large and spacious and had more bedrooms and bathrooms than I needed but I loved the location and enjoyed being in the center of it all.

I heard Samuel’s footsteps come from the stairs and I walked to meet him. He looked tired and worn out. He looked like I felt.

“So? How is she?”

“She’s exhausted and malnourished. I gave her fluids and something to help her sleep, but when she wakes up she will need something to eat. I suggest something light that won’t upset her stomach. Maybe a soup at first and then work your way up to solids.”

“I have to cook for her?” I asked somewhat disturbed.

“I didn’t say you had to cook for her. But surely you have something you could offer when she wakes.”

“When will she be able to go home?”

Samuel raised an eyebrow, “not any time soon. And especially not in this weather.” He gestured to the window. “I only agreed to help you because I live in the same building. If she goes out in that storm she’ll die. Don’t be a dick, Morello. Or at least try. Oh, and make sure to take out her IV when it’s done. I know you know how to do that.”

He gave me a bottle of sleeping pills for her and left without saying another word.

I met Samuel Wang when he was a fourth-year resident at Seattle Memorial. He treated my brother after he tried to take his own life. At the time the Morello name was still in the gutter and I didn’t have the wealth I had now. He helped us anyway.

I owed Samuel Wang greatly for what he had done for us. And now he was my private doctor.
