Chapter Eight

As Germaine glanced down at a sleeping Sage in his arms, he appreciated how swift the meeting with the man’s brother had turned out.

Glade had stared defiantly at them all, then scowled at Sage. “It’s about time you showed up,” he’d snapped. Then he’d peered imperiously around at everyone in the room—Germaine, Malone, and Gierson, a black panther shifter and fellow enforcer. “I want to talk to my brother alone.”

“Is that what you want, Sage?” Germaine had asked, cocking his head. No way in hell had he wanted to leave his mate alone with his asshole brother, but when Sage had nodded once, he’d done it. “Hit this button when you’re ready.” He’d pointed at a buzzer beside the door. Then he’d added, “Otherwise, we’ll be back in ten minutes.”

Unbeknownst to the standard enforcer—and even most councilmen—everything said in the interrogation rooms was recorded. Everyone had filed into the viewing room attached to the interrogation room. As it had happened, Germaine had heard Glade demand the ring.

“I wasn’t allowed to bring it in here,” Sage had told Glade. “Head Enforcer Mycroft said he would keep it locked up until your sentence was completed.”

“That’s not standard procedure,” Glade had snarled, leaning over the table toward Sage. Even sitting down and chained to the table, the lion shifter made an intimidating image. “You shouldn’t have allowed that.”

Sage had leaned back in his seat in an obvious attempt to put space between them. “I didn’t know that.” He’d hunched his shoulders and muttered, “Not like I could go against him.”

“Just wait until Father hears,” Glade had snarled, a malicious light filling his hazel eyes. “Wish I’d be around to see that.” Then Glade had waved his hand imperiously. “Get out of here, loser. You’re no good to me.”

Germaine had glanced between his fellow enforcers, not at all pleased by the exchange. He’d known he hadn’t been the only one thinking they would have to keep a close eye on Bill and Glade Kanston. His gut had told him something else was going on.

“How’s he doing?”

Hearing Investigator Ryzer Dialnist’s soft question, Germaine smiled at the shifter sitting in the middle seat of the SUV.

Ryzer had dyed neon green streaks into his brown hair. He’d switched out his piercings from the last time Germaine had seen him. Instead of four black studs with three tiny silver hoops running up his left ear, he had one stud for every color of the rainbow—in order starting at the top—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Ryzer also sported painted on, deep-colored orange jeans, an indigo form-fitting polo shirt, light make-up on his face, and bright blue nails.

Anyone walking down the street would peg the five-foot-seven-inch man as a flaming queen.

In truth, Germaine didn’t actually know what the man’s orientation was, or if he considered himself anything at all.

“He’s okay,” Germaine told the much smaller shifter. “Resting comfortably.”

Enforcer Dakota drove the SUV while Enforcer Gierson rode shotgun, allowing him and Sage to cuddle up in the back.
