Hubert Huxley stood on the deck of his brand-new superyacht, the Stinky Dog II, watching everything taking place at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

His tracker, Eddie, he of the mustard stains, had tailed Jake McQuade and alerted Hubert to what, as he put it, was “going down.”

“Word is they’re heading to the Statue of Liberty,” Eddie had reported. “Tonight. After midnight. So, technically, I guess they’re really doing it tomorrow. In the morning.”

Hubert and Chauncy had only had about six hours to prepare.

But when you have access to all the money in the world, you can move fast.

They’d quickly outfitted their new yacht—what Hubert was calling his twenty-first-century pirate ship—with sophisticated long-range viewing scopes and listening devices. They set the equipment up near the wide windows of the party room.

“They’re going to dig up my family’s long-lost diamond!” Hubert told Chauncy. “Fine. Let them do the sweaty, dirty work. Once they have the diamond, we will board their vessel and steal it away. A treasure stolen by pirates from other pirates and then pilfered by my pirate ancestor from his pirate boss shall, once again, be pirated away.”

Chauncy flinched every time Hubert said a word with a P in it. Each one came with a popped puff of foul-smelling dog breath.

Thanks to all the high-tech spy gear, Hubert had been able to hear everything being said out on the island.

First Dr. Doublé confirmed that McQuade and company had successfully extracted la Gran Calabaza. They had somehow figured out that ridiculous treasure map.

But, true to her name, Dr. Doublé proceeded to double-cross the gullible dolts from Riverview Middle School. She was going to keep the diamond for herself.

Then things became super interesting.

A mysterious figure descended from the inky sky wearing a double-rotor drone backpack.

He was soon identified as Zane Zinkle, the fabled tech tycoon. He definitely had the brains and skill to engineer the human drone contraption.

Zinkle said something that piqued Hubert’s curiosity: “Pity you weren’t as lucky with the red one at the middle school. I really wanted the Red Lion. No, I really need it to fulfill my vision!”

Interesting. Zinkle was talking about the diamond on display in the lobby of Riverview Middle School.

Why would Zinkle want it as well as the largest diamond in the world?

Was he, as Kojo Shelton proclaimed, simply greedy? Or was Zinkle plotting to do something with the two enormous diamonds besides sell them?

Dr. Doublé had mentioned something about a “device” and “clients” being eager for its completion.

“What do you want to do, boss?” Chauncy had asked when it was clear that Zinkle was stealing la Gran Calabaza. “Should we storm the island and snatch the stone away from Rocket Man?”

“Let’s let it play out,” Hubert advised. “I suspect there is more to what is transpiring than we can currently comprehend.”

“Fine. Whatever. You’re the boss.”

“Because,” said Hubert dramatically, “I am Captain Brainiac!”

Chauncy cringed a little. “You still going with that name, huh?”

“Yes. Do you have an issue with it?”

“No, boss. I mean, Captain Brainiac.
