Chapter 15

“Phoenix Griffes has a criminal record.” Lucy slipped her reading glasses on. “Resisting arrest, possession for sale of a controlled substance.”

Gloria’s blood ran cold. “And felon in possession of a firearm. Is there a picture of him?”

“There is.” Ruth clicked on the link. A picture of the man who was in the framed photograph with Paige popped up.

“Great. I think Paige came here to get away from this guy.”

“Unfortunately, he knows where she is,” Gloria said.

“Yes, he does.”

“What are you going to do?” Ruth asked.

“Confront her. If this guy—Phoenix—is unstable or stalking Paige, we could very well be in danger.” Lucy tapped Ruth’s shoulder. “Is there anything else you can dig up on this guy?”

Ruth clicked back to the previous screen. There was another entry for Phoenix Griffes. She clicked on the link. “It’s taking me to another California Department of Justice site.”

“Oh, no.” Lucy placed a hand on her forehead. “Paige has a restraining order against this guy.”

“You need to talk to Paige. The sooner, the better.”

“I agree,” Ruth said, as she logged out of the system. “If he’s determined enough to track her down and send her a picture of the two of them together, it’s hard telling what he might be capable of.”

Lucy’s phone chimed. “Crud. It will have to wait. I need to run home and grab my cake for the cakewalk.”

“I need to grab mine too.” Gloria darted to the kitchen. She eased the cake plate from the fridge and set it on the table.

Ruth whistled. “What a beautiful cake.”

“It’s a pineapple carrot cake.”

“And almost too pretty to eat. Are those real flowers?”

“They’re even better. They’re edible flowers.” Gloria pointed to the purple pansies. “I hope it tastes as good as it looks. I’ve made my share of carrot cakes over the years but never one with pineapple.”

“I’m joining the cakewalk as well as donating my chocolate chip chunk cake,” Lucy said. “I’ll try to win yours so we can sample it.”

“I would’ve contributed a cake. Unfortunately, no one would buy it,” Ruth joked.

“C’mon, Ruth,” Gloria scolded. “I’m sure you can whip up a perfectly acceptable cake.”

“It’s too late now. I’ll pull a Lucy and buy a spot in the game.”

Margaret, who was hosting the cakewalk, was setting up in the park’s pavilion when they arrived. Since the festival committee had already earmarked each of the fundraising events to special projects, Gloria knew the money they raised from the cakewalk would pay for repairs to the playground equipment, as well as adding a dog park. The spot had already been cleared, and all they were waiting on was cash to buy the fence materials.

The committee’s goal was to make enough money to add a summer splash pad for the area children, although Gloria wasn’t holding out hope for that to happen.

Several residents voiced concerns that, since it could only be used during the summer season, the money should be used for something else.

Lucy and Gloria added their cakes to the table, and then the trio perused the offerings.
