Figure 10.2 The mean electrical axis (large ‘blue-coloured’ arrow) in an animal with right ventricular enlargement (RVE) and how this is ‘seen’ from the six limb leads. Note how lead 3 now becomes more positive, as compared to lead 2 (for example), and also how aVR (which usually has a negative QRS complex) has now become positive. This is termed a right axis shift. Conditions associated with right ventricular enlargement can produce a right axis shift, such as pulmonic stenosis, tricuspid dysplasia or cor pulmonale.
