Like an opera singer warming up for a big performance, Pig had his own pre-show ritual. He always flapped his stubby wings and shook his tail feathers before he announced the start of a new day. This morning was no different, except for the fact that he was in Sergio’s living room.

At the sound of ruffling plumage, Sergio’s eyes blinked open. Sleeping on the couch nearby, he reached out, rubbing his fingers along the bird’s spiky red comb, causing Pig to cluck and whine contentedly. “We don’t want to wake Mila, okay, buddy?”

No doubt the storm had sucked water and sand away from shore, leaving a murky mess that wouldn’t have made for good fishing. Better to wait a day or two before heading out. Normally, he would have rolled back over to get a few more hours of sleep, but knowing Mila was a few steps away in his bed had made sleeping difficult all night and impossible now.

Sergio smiled. The memory of dancing with her in the candlelight was something he couldn’t get out of his head. They’d fallen into step with one another so easily, their bodies finding each other’s rhythm as naturally as the moon and tide. And the way his body had responded to her. God, if she could make him react that way with just a dance, he couldn’t imagine what they could do in the bedroom.

After their talk last night, her opening up about her father, he didn’t think he’d ever be able to look at her without wanting her again. What kind of strength and love would it take to carry a secret like that alone in order to protect her sisters? Holding back last night had been one of the hardest things he’d done in a long time.

Sergio grunted and chucked a pillow over his head. There was no way he could go for the statesider. Maybe she wasn’t as bad as he’d originally thought, but she was still dead set on taking that land and using the islands as a jumping off point for some high-paying career. His freewheeling lifestyle was perfect for him. Charm the tourists and enjoy their vacations like they were his, too.

Sergio leaped up from the couch and went to the bathroom to douse himself in cold water. On the way out, he paused by his bedroom door. His muscles twitched with the desire to nudge it open for a quick peek. Reluctantly, he dragged himself away, down the hall and out the front door.

Two hours later, Sergio tossed another armful of palm fronds into a chest-high pile in the rear yard. He’d already been to his aunt’s house and back. With a metal roof, shatterproof windows, and galvanized steel securing the walls to the rafters, her only worries were debris and power outage, but her special generator was already running. Other than a few downed trees away from the house, she was fine. Six of his cousins had spent the night at her place to keep her safe.
