Chapter 16
The smell of melting cheese filled the kitchen as Maggie poured the morning tea, humming the tune of one of her favourite worship songs while Frank got dressed for the day.
âSmells wonderful out there,â he called from the bedroom.
Maggie smiled. âThank you.â
Their morning routine was one of her favourite moments of each day. Since Julianâs death, there were fewer days when they stayed in late, but the few they had were wonderful. Today was one of those days. It was nine oâclock, though the sky would never give that away. Thick clouds blocked the sunâs rays giving the feeling of early morning. She looked out the window and wished she had a different view. A view of the ocean, perhaps.
Months ago, she and Frank discussed taking an extended vacation, returning to Broome where theyâd had their honeymoon, and then driving down the coast road to Perth. Julianâs passing had derailed their plans, and since then, the subject hadnât been discussed again, but a deep longing to be away with Frank filled her. It wasnât realistic at the moment, but one day soon, maybe it would be.
He entered the room, a grin on his face as he strode towards her. He still stole her breath away. He wore an off-white button-down shirt open at the neck, smart dark trousers, and shiny black shoes. He also smelled of soap and the subtle woodsy cologne sheâd given him for Christmas.
He wrapped his arms around her from behind and nuzzled her neck. âHowâs the best cook in the area doing?â
She laughed, leaning into him. âI donât know. Janellaâs up at the house.â
âVery funny.â Tightening his embrace, he kissed her temple. âI meant you, of course.â
A smile lifted Maggieâs lips. âIâm doing very well. Howâs the best husband doing?â
âI donât know. Nathanâs at the house with Olivia.â
She faced him and swatted his arm lightly. âNow whoâs the kidder?â
âWhatâs life without a little laughter?â Frank released her, and rounding the table, sat down and watched as she lit one of the stove burners and sprayed the frying pan with butter-flavoured oil before setting it over the flame.
âSausages?â
Frank nodded. âYes, thanks. Whatâs in the oven?â
âVegetable quiche. I thought we could use a change. I found a recipe in a magazine I wanted to try.â She took the tray of sausages from the fridge and dropped four into the pan. They sizzled immediately. She stepped back as she pushed the sausages around to coat them with the oil. âAre you ready for today?â
âAs much as I can be. Olivia gave us the figures we need. If the bankâs amenable, we should be able to progress with the purchase. It should only take a few weeks to get the approval, but you know how things can be with banks and mortgages. Sometimes they require a kidney and a left arm before they give the go-ahead, but Iâm sure theyâll see the merit of the deal as much as we do, and theyâll give us the loan. I wish we could buy it outright, though.
