“Your home for as long as you desire, my innocent.” He pressed his thumb pad on a touchscreen on the wall, right below a plaque that read PENTHOUSE TWO, and the door snicked open.

“Welcome home, Mr. Denning.”

The greeting was disembodied, female, and Australian, if Makenna’s guess was right.

“Temperature is sixty-eight degrees. A shipment of whiskey arrived this afternoon, compliments of Julien Bonds, and you have an 8:15 a.m. appointment with the London office. There have been no updates of note to the world money markets. Though your cryptocurrency has made moves in the past hour. You’re on track for your new car.” Silence hung for a moment as Zachary closed the door behind them. “Do you have a guest with you?”

He looked at Makenna. “Cole installed this. It’s a version of Bonds’s Hello, Molly. Everything electronic in the house talks to her—refrigerator, freezer, wine chiller, air conditioner, water heater, all the security devices. She’s one hell of a computer.”

“Hmph. I beg your pardon?”

“I mean her AI is state of the art. She’s not just a computer.”

“That’s better.”

Makenna laughed. “And she has personality.”

“You clearly have a guest, Mr. Denning.”

“I do.”

“May I say it’s about time? You’ve been a member of the Lonely Hearts Club for too long.”

He groaned. “Uhm, system glitch. She’s not perfect yet.”

“Care to tell me more?”

He rolled his eyes. “Cole. The VIP table?”

“With Hawkeye and Lorenzo Carrington and others?”

“He said it was for us loser bachelors. Even wrote that on the invitation. He filled in the RSVP card himself—plus zero.”

“Ouch.” She flashed him a mock wince.

“Yeah. Asshole makes his happiness known every chance he gets.”

“Mr. Denning, would you like to introduce me to your company?”

“I would.” To Makenna he explained, “She will learn your voice. If you are introduced, it means that she will respond to your commands.”

“What happens if you don’t do that?”

“Then she won’t follow orders. It’s a security precaution.” He crossed to a thick glass control panel that was at least eight feet tall. It resembled something out of a science fiction movie. After touching it with his thumb, he gave an instruction. “Miss Ellie, I’d like to you to meet Makenna.”

“Hello, Makenna.”

Zachary nodded to Makenna. “Say anything in response.”

This was so tech-forward her mind whirled. “It’s nice to meet you, Miss Ellie.”

“I await your commands.”

“Wow. That’s impressive.”

“She is when she wants to be, and when my friends aren’t messing with her programming.” His grimace was more of a snarl. “Miss Ellie, open the blinds.”

Makenna expected to be wowed, but nothing happened.

“Fuck me running.” He sighed. “Miss Ellie, please open the blinds.”

Silently they rose.

As he no doubt intended, Makenna was instantly drawn toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. “It’s like being on top of the world.” Whenever she was on the Strip, she expected to look out and see neon everywhere, but since they were so high up, she looked down on nearby buildings. “It must be spectacular during the day.”

“Mountain view. I’m sure it’ll take your breath away, if Miss Ellie decides to cooperate.”

She grinned. “Do you always have to say please?”

“Only when she’s annoyed at me.
