Chapter Seventeen

All day the next day, Faith could think of nothing else but that kiss. First off, she’d kissed Gray. The one person she’d been trying to convince herself not to feel any attraction to. But who had she been kidding? Some things were beyond a person’s control, and besides, it was just a kiss—one kiss, nothing more. Luckily, she’d driven Gray home and Gray hadn’t tried to tempt her with more.

But that kiss.

Wow.

Faith closed her eyes and savored the memory.

Kayla had left work for the afternoon to run some errands. Faith was hoping to catch Kayla at home, alone, so she could finally get some clarity on what exactly had happened between Kayla and Gray so long ago.

She was in luck. When she turned into the driveway, only Kayla’s Subaru was there. She knocked, but then didn’t wait for a reply before letting herself in.

“Kayla?” She tossed her coat across the back of the sofa.

“I’m in here.” Kayla’s voice came from the kitchen.

Kayla and Dan had a comfortable house. It had probably been someone’s vacation getaway. It wasn’t large, but with two bedrooms and two baths it was the perfect size. The walls were varnished wood, as were the floors. Kayla had added sectional rugs to break up all the hardwood and make the place cozier in the winter. There was a huge stone fireplace, the sort of hearth you’d expect in a ski lodge. Kayla had confided to Faith that the fireplace was what sealed the deal for her. And so, it became the heart of the entire place with sofa and chairs set in a half circle so that everyone could bask in its warmth.

“Hey, what are you up to?” Kayla was putting veggies in the fridge. Two bags of groceries sat on the island countertop waiting to be unloaded.

“I have a freelance job to do. I was on my way home to finish it, but I had to ask you something.” She probably sounded more serious than she meant to because Kayla immediately turned to look at her.

“Is something wrong?”

“Oh, no, nothing like that.” Faith distracted herself by taking groceries out of the bags and placing them on the counter for Kayla. Was that actually helpful? Probably not, but it gave her something to do with her hands. “I wanted to ask you about that thing you told me about…the thing with Gray.”

“Oh. My. God. You slept with her.”

“No! Please, give me a little credit.” Faith frowned. Thank goodness they hadn’t slept together because there’s no way she’d have been able to lie to Kayla about it. “We…kissed.”

“I knew it.” Kayla grinned. “I knew it was just a matter of time.”

“How did you know?” Faith certainly wasn’t that predictable, was she?

“Because you are you and Gray is Gray. It was inevitable.” Now Kayla sounded smug, but not in a mean way, just way too sure of herself.

“Well, before this thing with Gray goes any further, and I’m not saying it will, I want to know what happened between you two.
