"Five hundred, huh? Boy, I'm sure going to get me some new duds when we get to town," Tommy Jack said, rubbing his soiled hands together.

''We've got to be real careful," Raymond Tee warned them. "Folks done seen these boys in this wagon real recent. We show up driving it, they're liable to be suspicious."

"Yeah, how we going to work that?"

"We'll park it about a half day outa town. Kinda walk in at night and buy us some saddle horses." He stripped some bills from his left hand to his right one. "Then we'll buy us some new clothes that don't stink like buffalo guts." He took more money into his right hand. "Then we'll go to the whorehouse and raise hell."

"Yeah-who!" the boys shouted, and threw their hats in the air. The pair soon had him in a circle with them as they jigged around shouting, "We're rich, we're rich. I'll be a son of bitch, we're rich!"

The sun hung low. The days weren't getting longer fast enough for Slocum. After the meal several of the men had thanked him for finding the buffalo in the numb fashion of men who were worked to the point of exhaustion.

"Thirty more tomorrow if I find them?" he asked aloud. There were many grumbles, but those saying, "Oh, yes," outnumbered the groaners.

"Did you get that many today?" Glenda asked, scooting in with a late plate of beans and meat.

"Actually about three dozen. I figured you'd spend the night over at the Morrises."

"No, my place is here. I took one day off. That's enough. But you know, she's lonesome. Hard to get away from her. She'd let us move them over here. It's him that is so dead set against being a burden on anyone. She appreciated the fresh meat you sent her too. Hers isn't keep-
