Chapter Seventeen
Undercity
Chewy looked at her gold wrist watch. It was Friday afternoon and traffic was going to be heavy-as if it wasn't always heavy. Heavier than usual? Yeah, that sounded more like it. It took her an extra hour to drive home because of an accident on the expressway. Then, some idiot decided he needed to park his truck on the shoulder and retrieve one of his golf clubs from the middle lane. He didn't get hit, but traffic had slowed to a crawl. Who in the hell owned golf clubs that were so important that you needed to walk out into a busy expressway to get them?
She parked the silver sports car in the garage. It was a two-seater with expensive chrome wheels on low profile tires, enough power to go from 0-to-100 mph in six seconds, and a faux tortoiseshell dashboard. She grabbed the bags from the car, walked-in, and heard grunting coming from the rec room. Tomorrow morning was Jordan's ice hockey tryout. The boy was a natural-she had no doubt about that, although from his efforts she thought that maybe the kid had unspoken reservations. She likened it to the message that she saw across the monitors at the gym-the dumb motivational ones showing people exercising. The last motivational message read "Your own self-doubt" just after the one that stated "other people's criticism". It was official, self-doubt was the killer.
Chewy glanced through the open door. She watched the white blond teenager do sweaty dumbbell shoulder presses of 35-pounds in reps of 10. He was shirtless and gleamed like he'd been doused in baby oil. Jordan's slender smooth frame had muscles in just the right places; he was stunning in the way that turned heads. She took out her phone and dialed Hammer's number.
"I'm glad you called," he said to her on the other end of the line. His voice sounded husky, a thing she suspected he did on purpose whenever she called and spoke with him.
"Why's that?"
"I need you to meet me tonight at 8:00 at the Paragon Club out in Purgatory. And bring a gun if you have one."
"A gun? Want to tell me what's going on?"
"I'd like to ask the same question, believe me. Also bring your goggles. We're going into Undercity, and I need to speak with Met. I want some fucking answers."
Chewy glanced through the door at Kolin, shirtless and wet, working out alongside Jordan. He counted out reps and forced the boy those few extra inches to get the most out of his workout. She heard a loud crash as Jordan dropped the weights from his hands. Realizing that they were a distraction, she turned her back on the room. "I'm not coming unless you can give me more information."
"Two of my men are dead," Hammer said.
She caught her breath, and smoothed her silky white hair over one ear. "How?"
"-Torn to pieces by something that lives in the tunnels below the city. It's been going on for a few years now, but I've not seen my men attacked like this.
