Chapter Eight

“Feelings. They are at the heart of all art. Love. Anger. Hope.

If a piece is devoid of feeling…it’s not art.”

~Harry’s Pottery

The next morning, my phone rang at an ungodly hour.

I reached over to my nightstand and saw Micci’s name.

“What the hell, Harry?” was her salutation.

“Micci, I called you first, but you didn’t answer. I tried to call him back and cancel, but he didn’t answer. What would you want me to do?”

“Not put yourself at risk,” she muttered.

“I didn’t. I met him in a public venue. I didn’t commit to anything. I…”

I ran down last night’s events. “It’s all so weird, Micci. A client’s name isn’t generally hidden by attorney-client privilege. I can’t imagine why Shawn would feel he had to keep it secret. But good news is, I had Trisha take some pictures. I’ll text them to you. Maybe you can find out something more about him than I could.”

“You aren’t supposed to be trying to find out anything about him.”

“Well, not me exactly. I had my dad’s investigator try to find him listed in any state’s bar association. She couldn’t. I do have an explanation for why he has no address…he’s staying in an RV.”

“Harry—” she started, revving up for what I assumed was going to be another scolding.

“This isn’t on me, it’s on you. I called. You didn’t pick up. Why didn’t you pick up, Micci?”

I swear, I could almost hear her blushing.

I know, that doesn’t make sense, but there it is. Micci Dana was dating. I’d place a bet on it. And she was embarrassed to admit it.

“Who is he?” I asked, trying to see if I was right.

“He who?” she asked.

I just waited.

I heard her sigh. “Just a guy. I went out on a date.”

“Good for you. I’ll send those pictures and I swear when he gets in contact with me, I’ll call you immediately.”

“Fine.”

“Oh, and I have a glass with his fingerprints on it.”

This time she laughed. “Harry, unlike the television shows, if I took the glass in and tried to run the fingerprints of someone who isn’t suspected of anything other than being a bad lawyer with a limited paper trail, I’d be in trouble.”

“Yeah. I get that.”

“This isn’t a television show, Harry. Figuring out who murdered Velma will take work. I do want to talk to this Shawn because you’re right, everything about him feels off.”

“When he calls again—and he wants that money so I’m sure he’ll call again—I will let you know immediately.”

“That will have to be good enough,” she said as she hung up.

There was no way I was going to go back to sleep after that.

I made my coffee, grabbed it and made an early start of my day. I was very much aware of the fact I was going to see Micah tonight.
