Chapter 12

Outside, she waited for what seemed an eternity for the first police officer to arrive. A nip in the air settled around her, and she tugged her cardigan closer to her body. Though, the coldness that had seeped inside her wouldn’t be warmed away by a layer of clothing. When she heard a car’s engine, she pushed off the side of the Jeep and turned around in time to see a police vehicle pull into the driveway. She caught a glimpse of the driver and gulped. Gabe was back at work. So, of course, he’d be the responding officer to her call for help. He parked behind her vehicle and got out. His eyes narrowed on her as he propped his hands on his utility belt and shook his head.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Kelly said.

“Do you?” Gabe’s stride forward was purposeful, and he passed right by her, headed to the front door. “Stay here.”

“He’s in the kitchen!” she called out as Gabe disappeared inside the house. She crossed her arms and then leaned back against her vehicle. She tapped her foot on the spot where she suddenly seemed rooted.

Various scenarios raced through her mind. With each one, the gruesome discovery she made minutes ago settled over her. And the fact that Bud had been murdered became more real. As did the way he’d been murdered. The bash on his head was no accident.

She couldn’t help but wonder if the attack had been a surprise. Had Bud known the attacker was in the house behind him? Had he known his murderer? Had he let the person in the house? Or had the attacker snuck in?

She rubbed her temples to ease the pain of the headache forming. She was supposed to be sorting through outerwear, not sorting out Bud’s murder.

The sound of another vehicle pulling into the driveway had Kelly looking over her shoulder. She immediately recognized Nate’s sedan. She let out a huge breath. Then, eagerly, she waited for him to exit his vehicle. All she wanted was to fall into his embrace and forget about Bud lying dead in the kitchen.

Nate rushed toward her and quickly pulled her into a hug. One hand cradled her head while another kept her body pressed against his. “Are you okay?”

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. It was taking every ounce of self-control not to break down into a blubbering mess.

Nate pulled back and then tilted her chin up with his forefinger. “Can you tell me what happened?”

She nodded again and then swallowed, willing herself to speak. “Walt told me Bud was here. I arrived, and the front door was open.” She pointed to the home’s entry. “I didn’t think anything of it because I knew Bud was moving furniture out of the house. When I went inside, I called out for him. He didn’t answer. Then I called for him again. Still no answer. I looked in the living and dining rooms. No Bud. The next room I checked was the kitchen.
