Chapter Three
As we drove south, the weather became warmer and the classic signs of what I expected California to look like began to appear. Palm trees lined the streets of Santa Barbara and massive mansions bloomed from the hillsides overlooking the sea.
We made it to Los Angeles at around three in the afternoon. Instead of finding a hotel or scoping out the club, we went straight to the beach. It was seventy-five degrees. For a Seattle girl, that was pretty hot.
Dylan and I walked the boardwalk of Venice Beach and I bought a swimsuit and beach towels. I couldnât wait to feel the sun on my pale, pale skin. We walked to a public restroom to change. Of course, I would change, Dylan would just pop into whatever he felt like wearing. Now that I knew how he did it, I was going to have to get him to manifest me some clothes and jewelry. Diamonds are a girlâs best friend, so I hear anyway.
I came out of the bathroom in my new bikini and sandals with a beach towel wrapped around my waist. Dylan was already waiting for me out front, wearing sunglasses and looking tan and sexy in Hawaiian print board shorts. We held hands along the boardwalk watching the antics of locals and tourists. I was beginning to understand what people say about Los Angeles. It did have a certain kind of vibe. It was like everyone was amped up on the sunshine and Mexican pot. People smiled and danced to street musicians. Laughter rang in the air.
It was hard for me to believe it was two days after Christmas. Back in Seattle, another snowstorm had hit, covering Puget Sound in a deep white blanket. I wanted to let the energy of this city fill me. I liked it here. It felt like flying.
I pulled Dylan out onto the beach, feeling giddy and excited. I wanted to get into the warm California water. There werenât as many people down on the beach as I expected but there were still a lot. I stripped off my towel and ran down the open sandy beach toward the ocean. My feet sank in the wet sand. When my toes hit the water, I realized that it was actually fucking cold.
âOh my God! I thought this would be warm!â
He stood with his arms crossed over his chest behind me, trying not to laugh.
âYou knew?â
âOf course. Iâve been here many times.â
âJerk. Why didnât you tell me?â
âWhen you get all hyper and gung ho like that, I find itâs better to just stand back and watch.â
I walked up the beach and shoved him in the chest hoping heâd topple over into the sand. He didnât. His smug looking face made me even more determined to get even, so I swiped his legs out from under him and he fell right on his ass.
âOh now youâre asking for it,â he said, jumping to his feet. He grabbed me around the waist, pinning my arms to my sides and hefted me over his shoulder.
