Chapter Nineteen
She was never sure if Gram Gram liked Uncle Bash or not, or if he was just the only son she had left, so she didn't have a choice.
When he'd appear after one of his mysterious "adventures," Gram Gram treated him to her best breakfast creation, a chocolate chip pancake sandwich with strawberries and cream cheese in the middle, cut into squares.
The nieces and nephews flocked to Uncle Bash, never allowing him to eat in peace until he'd picked up each one of them and told them a funny joke.
When he'd finished eating, Gram Gram shooed the children away. "Go do your chores now. Let your uncle have a confabulation with his mother."
They pretended to climb the worn midnight blue carpeted stairs, but always stopped on the top step, pressing their ears against the rails to hear what came next. The more of Gram Gram's grandbabies were present, the tighter the squeeze, and the more likely their ruse would end in loud arguments instead of inside information.
The children never had to wait long before raised voices and clanging dishes changed the jovial mood of their grandmother's home.
It was better drama than any television show they'd seen, at least the ones Gram Gram knew about.
Rarely would Uncle Bash stay the night. By four o'clock, he'd picked up another one of the keepsakes from his bedroom closet, currently occupied by Pennie, and tromped down the stairs.
The children waited for the sound of the front door slamming behind him before peppering Gram Gram with questions. "What did he want?" "Why are you mad?"
She always answered in the same matter-of-fact voice. "When I want you to know, I'll tell you. Now shoo!"
Maddysin's revelation that Uncle Bash and Gram Gram had many arguments wasn't news. But was it a motive for murder?
