CHAPTER 15

When Maddie pulled up outside her house, her phone beeped with a text. It was from her sister, Tammy.

Is it okay if I come to stay for a few days next week?

Maddie smiled at the thought and replied that she couldn’t wait. When Maddie had told her sister that she planned to move back to Bayview, she immediately asked if she could visit. Her heart raced with excitement at the thought of seeing her.

As Maddie walked toward her house, she noticed a set of rocking chairs, a table, and chairs, where her empty porch used to be.

“What’s this?” She laughed as she walked up the steps, then froze when her front door swung open.

“Maddie!” Amber smiled at her. “Sorry to barge in like this, but Mom decided we just had to come over for tea. She couldn’t wait to see you.”

“Oh, it’s alright.” Maddie grinned as she saw Amber’s mother step out behind her.

“I hope you don’t mind, your mother always made sure I had a key to the house. I wanted to surprise you.” Iris smiled as she set a tray with teacups and saucers, down on the table. “I figured, we’ll be doing a lot of visiting, so we’ll need to be comfortable.”

“This is amazing.” Maddie took a deep breath as she enveloped Iris in a tight hug. She stepped back and gazed at her. From her white hair piled on the top of her head, to the long, flower-covered dress she wore, she couldn’t have looked more different than her own mother did, and yet her entire presence reminded Maddie of the woman she’d lost. Her mother always insisted on making tea whenever someone stopped by. She would press them to stay, even if they only had a minute. “Thank you, so much, both of you.” She settled into one of the chairs as Bella and Polly pranced out onto the porch. “I guess you met the girls, Iris?”

“Beautiful girls they are, and so well-mannered.” Iris grinned as she reached down to pet them.

Maddie smiled to herself as she knew how mischievous they could be.

“I just spoke with Nancy.” She took a cup of tea from Iris. “This is a nice change after that.”

“Oh, let me guess, Max was home?” Amber gave a short laugh. “Those two are like oil and water.”

“And yet, they have stuck together for quite some time.” Iris shook her head. “I don’t see how they’ve managed to stay together. But all relationships are different, I guess.”

“What were they fighting about this time?” Amber met her eyes.

“Actually, over whether Nancy was acting suspicious. He thought she was talking too much about her feelings for Helen. I guess, the police have found out about her recent comments against both the resort and Helen and are questioning her about them.” Maddie frowned. “I really don’t know what to think. She certainly seems to have a temper. At least toward her husband.”

“That’s true, she does.” Amber swirled her tea in her cup as she looked down into it.
