PORTAGE

Jaime spent most of the night prodding Cary in the back with his elbows and grumbling to himself about lumps of clay and false pretences and other things that couldn’t be helped. When it was barely light he left the tent, and though by rights Cary should have followed him, he lay for several minutes more, weighed down by misery. This northern country didn’t speak his language, the stony black hills mute beneath his feet, the blanketing forests dark and desolate-feeling. And they had barely begun, had miles to go and then… He doubted even Sandover understood what they were about.

He caught up with Jaime at the docks. He was sitting at the end of the jetty, his feet dangling. Cary nearly left him alone, but unlike the vastness of the ocean, Jaime could cross the mile wide river in a matter of minutes, or travel along it until he reached the next settlement, never to be seen again.

This early in the day, most boats launching belonged to fishermen and the dockyard was quiet. A special sort of quiet, not the blunt, wind-swept silence of the desert but a muted softness: the dip of oars in smooth water, the rustle of leaves, the warbling song of a solitary bird, its black wings banded with red, which clung to the stem of a reed.

Jaime waited for him to sit beside him then got up and started back towards land. ”Don’t be like this,” Cary said.

Jaime stopped. “What does it matter to you?” he said in a harsh, unhappy tone.

“We have to put up with each other for a while longer. Can you not make it harder than it has to be?”

“You know my feelings. If you won’t help me then don’t consider yourself my friend.”
