Colin and I climbed out of the van. I carried a box of garbage bags so we could pack up Janelle and Matt’s clothes for charity. Colin unlocked the door and we entered. The house was eerily quiet. My mind went back to my high school years when Janelle, Colin, and I lived there together. Colin was just a baby when I moved in and was still quite young when I left for college. Now he was fifteen. Where did the years go? Mom said time passed faster as one aged. I guess she was right.

“Do you want me to clean out your mom’s stuff or…”

“I’ll do Mom’s clothes. You do Matt’s.”

I nodded.

We headed upstairs into Janelle and Matt’s bedroom. I knew this would not be easy for Colin. I’d offered to do it all myself, but he wanted to come. I set to work, first hitting Matt’s drawers in the dresser and then moving onto the closet. My sister’s death was the hardest for me to deal with, but I also missed Matt. Before I moved the two of us used to work on the old Skyemobile together. He was a good father for Colin and was a little like a dad to me too. Matt would have gone crazy over the Auburn. I wish he was alive to see it.

Clothes from the dresser filled an entire garbage bag and I pulled out another as I began gathering clothes that were hanging in the closet. Colin made good progress with his mom’s dresser drawers, but moved more slowly when he reached the closet. I kept an eye on him. He was sad, as expected, but seemed to be handling it well.

I had my head stuck in the closet when I heard Colin laughing. It was not a sound I expected.

“What?”

Colin was holding up a blue and white striped top.

“Remember this?”

“Uh, not especially.”

“Mom was wearing it that time when we came back from South Bend and caught you with those twins.”

I grinned.

“Hey, we were merely wrestling.”

“Please! I didn’t believe that even when I was ten. I knew what the three of you were doing! I saw you all pulling up your jeans and trying to zip up.”

“I thought your mom and I had you fooled.”

“I wasn’t as dumb of a kid as you thought.”

“I never thought you were dumb, but I thought we got that one past you.”

“Nope! I didn’t believe that story about Jarret Dilger moaning and grunting in his sleep either. I knew you guys were doing it when he stayed over.”

“Just what else do you know?”

Colin grinned evilly.

“I’ll never tell.”

Colin gazed at the top.

“We had some fun, didn’t we? Mom, you, and me, and later Matt.”

“Yeah, we sure did. As excited as I was to leave for school in California I hated moving out.”

“I hated that too. I missed you so much.”

“Yeah, but at least you had Matt.”

“He was a great dad. I sometimes wonder what my biological dad was like.”

“Your mom never told you?”

“Not much. Did you know him?”

“Barely.
