CHAPTER 28

FLASHBACKS AND ECHOES

Emmy took her shades off when she saw Caleb by his car. She was waiting for him outside The Orange, just sitting by one of those tables near the patio.

“Sorry,” he told her, “I couldn’t get out of the house right away.” He said. “Ashley made the couturier go there and she wanted the fitting to be done. She even wants you to be one of her bridesmaids. I told her she didn’t really know you.”

“You know,” Emmy said, “It’s weird.” She went on. “She’s acting like she really likes me and wants me to be her friend. I feel like she’s doing it to distract me…but why? What does she want?”

“I don’t know, Em.” He said. “But when you showed me the charm bracelet last night…I just thought that maybe Ashley and whoever this person knows me from way back when and wants to ruin me.”

“So, you think this has a connection to Marissa’s death?”

“Yeah…I mean, things have been pretty crazy from then on. Marissa and I, started fighting when I started seeing Rose, and again, I know there are no excuses for my actions but…that’s that…and come to think of it, I feel like I didn’t even know much about Marissa’s past…I didn’t know about her whole family, or her other relatives. She didn’t have many friends. I didn’t know much except for the fact that...”

“She’s a publishing heiress and one of the richest people in town?”

Caleb took a deep breath. “At first,” he said, “we were happy, just like a normal couple. And I thought that I loved her and could give her every part of me but I just couldn’t.”

“Because you saw how boring she was?”

“You could say that. And, I didn’t really think I was ready.”

“Of course, you weren’t. You married her for money, remember?”

If he got hurt by that, he didn’t let her know. He just went on and told her all about the last night that he and Marissa fought, about the night that she died, a story that she knew too well.

“You’re not going to that convention, you freak!”

“What did you just say?”

“Are you even married to me or did you just use me so you could get back on track, use all my assets and then just throw me away afterwards?”

“You’re being paranoid.”

“And you’re being stupid. Don’t think that I’m not a smart person, Caleb. I know what you’re doing. I know what you’re trying to do.”

“You know what? Fine. If you don’t trust me, get in the car with me. Come to the convention with me. God knows you can use a little bit of time out as all the time you spend at home is fucking with your mind!”

“Fuck you!”

“Fuck you, too!”

“You know? Let me do just that. Let me come with you. Let’s see what happens. You’re nothing without me, anyway.”

“Fine, I’m going now. Get dressed up if you want to!”

Marissa didn’t dress up. She just followed Caleb to his car. Little did Caleb know that it would be the last time they’d be riding that car together.
