Chapter Nineteen

Kenna knocked on the door to Jordan’s hospital room. It might be a long shot, but she needed information about Annabelle. Her mind had spun all morning while she drank coffee in the car on the way to pick up Elijah for school, and all the way here.

Ron had been the undercover sent into the Children of the Morning because the former chief—an officer at the time—had been one of them. A registered member of the church. Apparently, they’d persuaded him to turn on his brethren. That, or he never had. He’d simply facilitated the feds in their work and never given up his beliefs.

Which meant he remained one of them.

But would they really have shot at him if he was? As far as she could see, there were three options. One, he’d told the truth about wanting answers. Two and three involved a double cross and a triple cross.

“Come in.”

Kenna sighed and opened the door.

Jordan, the kid she and Thomson had recovered from the basement of the barn, sat up in his hospital bed.

“You look well.” She smiled. “Lot better than the last time I saw you.”

He studied her for a second, then it clicked. “You. From the compound.”

“That’s right.” She left the door open since there wasn’t a parent or guardian here, and she didn’t exactly have permission to talk to him. Most seventeen-year-olds she met didn’t need mom’s permission to talk to someone—nor did they want to have to ask for it. “If it’s all right with you, I’d like to ask you about Annabelle. I’m a private investigator.”

Jordan scrunched up his nose for a second, his gaze on the blanket up to his waist. “I heard they found her body.”

Kenna explained about the mine, and the gunmen, but didn’t give too much graphic detail. “You might be able to help me fill in some of the gaps. Even if you don’t think it means anything, it could help.”

This young man was a far cry from the football captain she’d met in the compound, but she figured he’d bounce back in front of his friends. He’d have to prove his strength, and that meant saving face even if what happened put a crimp in the fall season.

She glanced at the window, covered with tall sheer drapes. The curtains hung either side of the window so light streamed in. Elijah would be all right at school, and the police had a detail in the building just in case. No one was prepared to take any chances even if the chief wasn’t convinced the near kidnapping had anything to do with it.

Jordan shrugged one shoulder. “What do you wanna know?”

“You and Annabelle were friends, right?” Enough they’d gone together to the compound. “What did she tell you that she wouldn’t have told her parents?”

“You want me to spill all her secrets? She’s dead.” He looked up, tears in his eyes until he sniffed and blinked them away.

“You were close?” She’d pegged him as a self-absorbed teen football star, but evidently there was a heart in there.
