LIFT EVAC. Patrollers practice a lift evacuation at Beaver Creek Resort shortly after the ski area was established in 1980. The technique is used to lower guests in the event of a lift malfunction. The ability to climb lift towers and execute a high-angle rope rescue is an important part of a patroller’s responsibility. The state of Colorado also enforces evacuation standards across all ski areas. (Courtesy of Vail Resorts photograph archive.)

EAST WALL. Mark “Campo” Campian prepares an avalanche round during the winter of 1984–1985. Arapahoe Basin uses the “avalauncher” as part of mitigation efforts in an area known as the East Wall. (Courtesy of Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol.)
