In Chapter 5 we modeled simple spaces. Here, we’ll build on the tools and techniques learned there to make an interior model of a two-story home. Our approach will be: (1) Import and model a raster first-floor plan, (2) make a shell to enclose the floors, and (3) import and model an AutoCAD second-floor plan.

Figure 6-1: Floor plans of a two-story house.

Model the Shell and First Floor

Figure 6-2: Trace a face over an imported floor plan jpg.

Import a jpg of the first floor (Figure 6-2). Explode and group it. Resize it based on a 3′0″-wide exterior door, using the Tape Measure. Outline the perimeter with the Rectangle to make a face. Then change the face style to transparent at View>Face Style>X-ray.

Push/pull the face up 20′. Then select the top and erase (Figure 6-3). This creates the exterior walls.

Group the walls (Figure 6-4). This creates a shell inside which modeling can be done without sticking to the walls.
