Change of scale

This can be used to imply distance in drawings.

Overlap

This works better than ‘kissing’ shapes (top).

LANDSCAPE TEXTURES

A landscape drawing or sketch may not always have “ great depth and distance in it; in fact, an ‘intimate landscape’ scene with shallow depth of foreground only,or just the foreground and middle ground, is a perfectly valid subject.

Translating what you see

However, when we draw more intimate landscape scenes, we are closer to our subject matter, we ‘see’ more detail, and we need to find a way to translate what we see. A tree, seen in the summer, will have thousands of leaves. A camera might capture every leaf but we artists need to find a way to ‘suggest’ foliage or we will be drawing that tree for months!

We need to develop a language of ‘descriptive marks’, which will help to suggest landscape elements; marks that will represent rather than reproduce landscape features. The following pages offer just a few ideas of my own, but in time you will develop your own range of richly descriptive marks to suggest the textural qualities of the landscape. Remember that different media will provide different effects, so do try to be spontaneous and experiment playfully in order to add to your repertoire.
