The next morning, I arrived in the office at nine oâclock sharp. âMorning,â I said, my sweeping gaze taking in Betty and Jedidiah. They returned my greeting, and Jedidiah went back to his computer, while Betty handed me a call slip and said, âDetective Scott called just as I was unlocking the office door. He says he has some good news.â
Betty eyed me with a hint of rebuke in her eyes. âBurning the midnight oil again?â
âYes, but Iâm bright-eyed and ready to begin again,â I said. I reached for the glass of milk she held out for me.
I had a fair bit of work to plow through before my appointment with Tanya, so I got right to it.
Returning Detective Scottâs call was first on my mental agenda.
âDetective Scott,â a voice met my ear before I was aware the phone had time to ring. Scott must have picked it up on the first ring.
âCame in early today,â Scott said, âand talked to some of the detectives in Homicide with a lot more time under their belts. You were right. Law enforcement can set up an appointment without having to go through all the bullshit. Seems the criminals arenât protected from the law. I spoke to Jim Armor, whoâs been in Homicide for five years or so and has made two trips to Pelican Bay. Says itâs not for the faint of heart. Iâm pretty sure Lieutenant Biddle could get us in, but when I stopped in to see him, I discovered heâd gone off to some sort of training meeting todayâleft about ten minutes ago.â
âThanks. Iâll give him a jingle first thing in the morning,â I said
My next call was to Sunset Cadillac. After being transferred around, I reached a man called Bill Schaefer, the quick-service manager. He pretty much confirmed my suspicion about the wiring being off but said heâd pull out a schematic that someone in my office could pick up today. Iâd pick it up myself on the way to Tanya Guttenbergâs.
