Chapter Twenty-One

Angie declared the new chocolates to be perfect just as they were, but Milo agreed with my opinion that the flavor of the pumpkin cheesecake truffles could be more intense. That didn’t stop him—or me—from sampling a couple more, though. As we finished up the taste-test, Susan Derendorf came into the shop, followed by two small groups of tourists.

“I’ll help Mrs. Derendorf,” I said to Angie before slipping out from behind the counter.

“Good morning,” I greeted. “Is there anything I can help you with today?”

She glanced around the shop. “I had a hankering for your ice wine truffles.”

I smiled at that. “One of our most popular products.”

I led her to the shelf that held a stack of the boxed truffles. I’d made the chocolates with ice wine purchased from a winery in Quebec, Canada. Even though I didn’t drink much in the way of wine, or any other alcohol, I loved the ice wine ganache that filled the popular truffles.

“Is there anything else I can help you find?” I asked.

“I think I’ll have a box made up of an assortment of chocolates to share with my husband. I’d like to include at least four salted caramels. Those are his favorite.”

“Of course,” I said. “I can help you with that.”

Milo was showing one group of tourists around the store while Angie was gift wrapping a box of chocolates. I grabbed a box and a set of tongs from behind the counter so I could remove chocolates from the display case. Susan pointed out which ones she wanted, and once a dozen bonbons sat in the box, I closed it up.

“How are you and your husband doing?” I asked as I punched the sale into the cash register.

“We’re all right, thank you,” Susan replied. “A little unsettled, maybe, but that’s probably the case with everyone here in town.”

“Because of the murder?” I guessed, before telling her the cost of her purchase.

“Yes. It’s a terrible thing.”

“I imagine it’s particularly frightening that Archie was killed right next door to you,” I said.

“Dreadfully,” Susan agreed. “I hope the police find the killer quickly so we can all rest easier.” She dug her wallet out of her purse. “Do you know if there’s going to be any sort of service for Archie?”

“I haven’t heard of one,” I said. “It feels terrible to say this now that he’s dead, but he wasn’t well-liked. I guess you know that firsthand. I understand he caused a lot of trouble for you and your husband over a shed.”

Susan nodded as she slid her credit card out of her wallet. “Archie kept insisting that the shed Karl built encroached on his property, but that really wasn’t the case. Karl made sure to keep it well within our property line.”

“I heard he even tried tearing the shed down,” I said.

She nodded and tapped her credit card to pay for the chocolates. “I had to call the police, but after that incident, things calmed down.”

“Because the police got involved?” Somehow, I couldn’t picture that being enough to cool Archie’s temper.
