Chapter Nine

Later I went to Coreys to meet with Hastings. He said, “Maranville is a buttoned-up old buzzard.”

I said, “Yeah. He is. He told me he liked you.”

“What did he get from it?”

“Nothing.” And then I changed the subject. “I need to talk to Rostov. He’s not at the Long Lake Hotel, under the Spelvin name or any other so far as I can tell. Where is he?”

“He’s holed-up in a motel in Tupper Lake, nursing his wound. Are you sure that all you want to do is talk to him?”

I think that Hastings’s concern was sincere. I wanted to see if he would tell me more. “Yeah. I think so. But I might need to ask him to leave the country.”

“He wouldn’t take that well.”

“How much English does he understand?”

Hastings said, “All of it. He can also speak it when he wants to. Why do you want to talk to him?

“I want to know whether he’s trying to capture Reilly or to kill him. I think he wants to shut him up.”

“Why would he want to do that?”

I gave him the obvious answer, the truthful one. “Because Reilly knows something your side would rather not reveal.”

“If that were the case, why wouldn’t I be trying to silence him?”

“Maybe you’re working on it, but you’re just more subtle and skillful.”

Hastings stood and paced the room. He said, “You’re very kind, but you give me too much credit. If you’re planning to meet with Vasily, be very careful. Don’t push him. For God’s sake, don’t get into a shootout with him. He’s a professional. Reilly was lucky and was able to shoot from cover. The odds are you won’t be that lucky.”

“Where should I try to meet him? I don’t think I want to go to his motel room.”

“No, you don’t. He’s a big man and even with his wound he could kill you with his bare hands.”

“Thanks.” I knew what Hastings said was true.

Then he had a suggestion. “What about meeting with him here?”

“That’s an idea.” I liked the idea, but I suggested an improvement on it. “I think he might be more willing to talk if you weren’t around. I think you outrank him.”

“Yes, I do.” Hastings paced again. “What if he thought that he was coming here to meet with me, but it turned out that only you were here instead? It would add an element of surprise, which would be to your advantage. This is familiar territory for you. You’d be more comfortable here than he would.”

“I like that idea.”

So that’s what we arranged. Hastings called Rostov, who agreed to come to the house at Coreys the next day at three. Hastings told me to arrive at two-thirty and that he would already be gone. The front door would be unlocked and I should let myself in.

I didn’t sleep well, and there was a cold rain when I left the hotel, so instead of walking down the street to the Full Moon for lunch I
