After the meal I put Honey into a taxi home and started walking back to the club to give myself a chance to think. Our conversation about Deak Robinson led me back to thoughts about Liz Green’s and Anders’ families slaughters as well as a similar kind of tragedy that had befallen the man Pollux who was looking for Anders who had also suffered six deaths in his family. If I added on Pollux’s six victims that made it 18 victims.

As I rounded the corner to my block I saw Hummingbird Moses standing by the side doorway of the club looking at the fresh posters for Branford Marsalis’ appearance at the Be Bop Tavern that Christine had put up earlier in the day on the club’s marquee.

“I like that boy, he got traces of Coltrane in his playin, I feel the notes, know what I mean?” mused Moses pointing to the poster as I opened the door with my key. Back in my office Moses sipped on a beer as he looked into a small green notebook that fitted into the palm of his hand.

“Remember I told you about my cousin with the church over in Brooklyn?

Turns out I was on the money. He got me in touch with a guy named Hershell Epps who does some part time janitorial work there. He’s one of his church members.” Moses paused, looking up from the notebook, then continued.

“This Epps fella used to work for the city, but he was pushed out, by guess who?”

“Liz Green.”

“Bingo.”

“Do you know why?”

Moses nodded confirmation. “Um hum, he was happy to talk, cause he has an axe to grind. Said something happened that wasn’t his fault that he got the blame for, that led to his having to take early retirement. Said there was a break-in in one of the council offices where he was working temporarily just for the week, covering for someone else and police said that if he had been doing his job right, that he should have been able to stop it.”

“Did he call the police?”

“Yeah, but he said the police covered things up cause it was Liz Green’s office that had been broken into.”

“When was this?”

“Almost a year ago. He thinks he was set up to take the fall cause the door the thieves supposedly came through hadn’t been jimmied from the outside. Also the locks on Liz’s office door and her desk wasn’t broken, which meant that the thieves had to have had a key to the office as well as the desk, which meant there was someone inside who provided them with access. And the powers that be blamed him.”
