Goat Sucker

Chuck had never really been one to be bothered by nightmares, but that night her dreams were horrible. Shadowy figures with red, angry eyes chased her through the woods. Icy claws raked at her. She couldn’t seem to outrun them. Every breath took more and more effort. A face—twisted, burned, and screaming—awakened her to a pillow soaked with sweat.

She sat up and reached for her lamp. As her fingers were alighting on the button Chuck froze. That feeling of someone being in her room returned. Squinting in the darkness proved completely useless.

The rational side of her brain finally woke up and she turned on the lamp, dispelling the shadows and her fears.

Chuck’s phone vibrated on the nightstand causing her to jump. She picked it up, finding that DeRosa had texted her back. At three in the morning.

‘sorry, been busy. moseby’s right. i’ll find you tomorrow afternoon.’

If Sally was still up, then something must be going on. Knowing she wouldn’t be going back to sleep anytime soon, Chuck fired up Netflix and started watching the first non-horror movie she didn’t recognize.

At some point she nodded off, awaking again when her alarm went off. She skipped breakfast, opting instead to take an early morning run. The cold was hell on her lungs, but a couple of hours later as she sat down to do evaluations, Chuck was glad she’d gotten her blood pumping early.

The evals were not the best she’d ever done. After reviewing them, she realized they, in fact, sucked. The events of the previous couple days made it hard to get enthused about sitting around and doing menial tasks. Glancing at her watch, Chuck jotted down a few more scribbles here and there until she felt the pages were at least passable.

She swung by Warehouse 1 and dropped off the evals before heading to the cafeteria. Walking past the recruit dorms, Chuck heard Tillman’s voice coming from inside. Peeking her head in, she saw him sitting next to Jess on a bunk. They each had a tablet in hand, and Tillman made several swipes on Jess’s tablet as he demonstrated one of its many features.

“You can group everybody’s comms by hitting the link tab, then dragging their name into whichever group or groups you want them in.”

Jess performed the action, then turned towards Tillman. “Under what circumstances would we have people in multiple groups?”

“The team lead may want to be part of multiple groups, in order to hear everyone while keeping overlap low within each group. The most typical reason is you’ll frequently have a command group, so the lead and command can talk to each other without the rest of the team hearing them.”

Jess nodded, just as Chuck cleared her throat purposefully. “Not to fuss, but you should probably get to lunch, Jess. You have labs this afternoon.”

“Oh, hey Agent Barnes. Sorry, I guess we kind of lost track of time.” Jess handed the tablet to Tillman. “Thanks Agent Moseby, you know, for the tips.” Jess rose and headed for the exit, giving Chuck a fist bump as she passed her.
