Chapter Fourteen
I woke up to the feel of Alistairâs lips on my shoulder. It wasnât the first time Iâd woken up that way in the last few hours, but with the pale light seeping in from the windows, it might be my last for the day. His heat at my back was fabulous, and it took everything in me not to burrow myself against him and go back to sleep. Well, either that or turn around and have another round of mind-blowing sex.
Really, it was a toss-up.
But with the spell Deya cast on us lifted, I knew I had other problems on the horizon, and going back to bed or consuming more of Alistairâs attention was not on the docket.
Not until later.
I knew at this point I probably didnât love Alistair. Fated love spell or not. But I knew enough about myself to know that I could love him. If he stuck around. If I let him stick around. And for right now that was enough. I wanted to see where this would goâwhich was more than Iâd given to anyone else in a long time.
âI can feel your brain working from over here. Anything you want to share?â
His voice was rough, either from sleep or an emotion I couldnât name, and I had to smile at the sound. That sound was like coming home to a warm bed and roaring fire in winter. I couldnât explain it any better than that. It was more than comfort, more than safety. It was something else altogether, and I really, really liked it.
âNo, Iâm good,â I murmured, unwilling to tell him just what I thought of waking up in bed with him.
âInteresting. Because I think you really like the fact that you woke up in bed with me, and you just donât want to say. If I had to guess, I think you like me and are wondering what the next step is. Youâre having the exact same thought I amâyou just donât want to admit it.â
Turning over to face him, I opened my mouth to deny it, until I took in the flicker of hope on his face.
I settled with humor because it was my default setting.
âI dislike it immensely when youâre right. Canât you just let me bask in the afterglow and make me breakfast?â
âI will once you give me a kiss. Then, you need to answer your bloody phone.â
âMy phone?â Honestly, Iâd thought Iâd lost my purseâand my athamesâto Deya, because after she hit me with that stupid powder, I was out of sorts until right about now. It was then that I noticed Alistair was fully clothed. Interesting.
âI just got back from getting your things. Your pocketbook and your athames were all you were missing, right?â
I checked the charms around my neck and my grandmotherâs ring. Nope, all there. Other than my clothes, I wasnât missing anything else. It vaguely occurred to me that Alistair found me even with my grandmotherâs hide me ring on. Somehow my magic superseded hers in the amulet Iâd given him.
