Evie woke to the sound of a loud bang and froze in place. She’d fallen asleep, but she wasn’t in her bed. Long dark hair fell over her face and covered part of her view. A shoulder pressed against her cheek and dampness covered the side of her mouth; she’d drooled.

She sat up once she felt certain that the bang did not represent an immediate threat and tried to stifle a yawn.

“Sleep well?” Hesta asked.

Evie looked around. The shadows from the window were longer now. “Did I sleep long?”

“Not really.”

Evie felt heat rise into her cheeks. “I fell asleep on top of you. I’m sorry, that was not very polite of me.”

Hesta shook her head. “Nice? It was lovely. To me, it felt as though you trusted me enough to let your guard down. And I’m honoured to––”

“Hesta!” Godwyn bellowed from the hallway. “Where in all the damnations are you?”

“Here in the drawing room,” she called back.

Godwyn turned the door handle so hard that the door burst open. “There’s an emergency, and Evie is missing.”

Only after he stepped into the room did he notice that Hesta wasn’t alone. “Oh. Well, that explains why no one can find Evie.” He narrowed his eyes. “You two look very cosy.”

“Yes, well, Evie came under attack, and I wanted to make sure she was well and safe from any further incidents.”

“What? How? When was this?” Godwyn asked. He drew back his shoulders and ground his teeth as though the news was a personal affront to him.

“There is a sonos loose in the city, and Evie was his target.”

“For goodness sake, if there has been an attack, you should have informed me.”

Evie stood up and faced Godwyn. “You are not my keeper, Godwyn Bethwood.”

He glared at Evie. “Yes, I am. Especially now that you’re involved with my family.”

“I am not your property anymore.”

“I am more than aware of the change in the nature of our relationship. Hesta has drawn you to us, and so it is my duty to take care of you, whether you like it or not.”

“Do I have a choice?” Evie asked.

“Not really, no,” he answered.

Hesta reached for her hand. She did that a lot, and Evie accepted it. She rarely even thought about her fear of touching Hesta anymore.

“Sit with me, Evie,” Hesta said. “Then Godwyn can sit down and tell us what the emergency is all about.”

He perched on the edge of the armchair, legs apart as he leaned his elbows on his knees. “There is something going on in the city.”

“Please elaborate,” Hesta said.

He took a deep breath. “It started this morning just after the council meeting, or rather, during the meeting.”

“What did?” Hesta prompted him.

Godwyn jerked from his memories. “The headaches came first. The members of the council had finished discussing my Freedoms for the Gifted Bill. Amendments had been discussed and it all went very well. So well, I thought we’d be given permission to set up the institute. Or at least that the council would allow the Bill to be passed under a probationary agreement.
